38 Algerians Die in 2 Days

PARIS -- Algerian security forces said seven people were assassinated on the weekend in Blida province, a stronghold of Moslem fundamentalists, bringing to 38 the number reported killed in two days in Algeria.

In a statement late Sunday, Algerian security officials said the seven were "assassinated in a cowardly way" -- their usual term for those killed by having their throats cut.

The statement, carried by the official Algerian news agency APS, did not say who killed the people late Saturday or early Sunday in Larbaa district, Blida province, which lies some 50 kilometers south of Algiers.

On Sunday, the newspaper El Watan said 31 people were killed in Blida on Friday night.

The deaths bring to more than 230 the number of those reported killed during the Moslem fasting month of Ramadan.
