12 Plotters Arrested

TBILISI, Georgia -- Law enforcement officers have arrested 12 people on suspicion of plotting to kill Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze and other top government officials, the country's interior minister said Friday.

The conspirators planned to assassinate Shevardnadze during the Tbilisi city festival in October, but they were arrested three days before the event, said the minister, Konstantin Targamadze.

The conspirators received money and instructions from Igor Georgadze, the former Georgian security chief who lives in exile in Russia, Targamadze said.
