Report: Jet Crashed, Then Exploded

A shepherd who witnessed the fatal crash of a Tajik passenger plane said it plunged into an immense sand dune and then exploded, according to the Gulf News paper of Dubai.

The account by the shepherd, Mohammed Adam Moussa al-Fagheeh, 48, who is from Sudan, also described his ride by camel seeking help and the later arrival of rescuers.

His description indicated there was no explosion before the three-engine aircraft plunged into the desert, as earlier reports had suggested. Emirates authorities could not immediately be reached for comment on the report.

The Tajik Tupolev Tu-154 airliner crashed near the Sharjah airport last Monday, killing all but one of the 86 people on board the plane.

The navigator, Sergei Petrov, survived and is hospitalized in Sharjah, one of the seven sheikdoms that make up the United Arab Emirates.

A doctor at Al-Qassemi hospital said Sunday that Petrov, who underwent surgery Wednesday for a compound skull fracture, was doing well and could speak properly.

Itar-Tass reported Saturday that Petrov was ready to answer investigators' questions about the incident. It also said the commission investigating the crash was expected to send the plane's black box to Moscow for analysis.
