Had Cake, and Ate It

MOSCOW -- Three Russians who failed a doping test will fly to Switzerland next week to explain to the International Swimming Federation that they had been tricked into eating a spiked cake, an official said Monday.

The Russian swimming federation said last week European 50 meters freestyle champion Natalya Meshcheryakova, European 4x200 freestyle relay gold medalist Vladimir Pyshnenko and Olga Kochetkova, European 4x100 medley relay silver medalist, tested positive for the steroid metandieone in a FINA check.

A Russian federation official who declined to be named said the swimmers had won the backing of the federation and not been dropped or even suspended from the national squad for the world championships in Australia in January.
