MOSCOW -- Prosecutors charged a senior figure in the Moscow City Council on Wednesday with corruption and abuse of office following the discovery of large amounts of cash, jewelry and illegal weapons in his office and apartment.

Valery Sidorov, 55, chairman of Moscow's labor and employment committee, was arrested Monday and held in the capital's Lefortovo prison, Itar-Tass reported, citing the Moscow prosecutor's office.

Police said searches of Sidorov's apartment and office had revealed $200,000 in cash in a safe, documents relating to foreign bank accounts containing more than $400,000, and $10,000 worth of jewelry. Two unregistered handguns and two foreign-made rifles were also discovered.
