Chemical Disarmament

MOSCOW -- Russia will dispose of 40,000 tons of chemical weapons in a two-phase disarmament program, the Defense Ministry announced Tuesday.

The move is in line with the international ban on chemical weapons, ratified by Moscow last month.

The first step will witness the destruction of 7,500 tons of gas in military stockpiles, followed by the disposal of 32,500 tons of chemical weapons used by the air force, the ministry said.

The program will require the construction of seven factories, at an estimated cost of $5.5 billion.
