Yagudin Set for Cup Win

ST. PETERSBURG -- Alexei Yagudin, who won last week's Grand Prix figure skating competition in Paris, got off to a good start at home in the opening night of the Cup of Russia.

Yagudin, who lives in St. Petersburg, placed first in the men's short program to put him in the lead of the four-day event Thursday, which is dominated by Russian skaters.

Yevgeny Plushenko of Russia and Vyacheslav Zagorodniuk of Ukraine trailed.

In the women's competition, Irina Slutskaya of Russia came in first in the women's short program, followed by Surya Bonaly of France and Olga Markova of Russia.

Nicole Bobek, the only American in the women's competition and a leading contender, didn't place in the top three. Neither did the only American in the men's competition, Michael Weiss.

The Cup of Russia, which has competition through Saturday and an exhibition Sunday, is the fifth of sixth events in the International Skating Union's Champions' Series.

In the pairs' short program, Yevgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov of Russia placed first, followed by Marina Eltsova and Andrei Bushkov, also of Russia, and a Canadian team, Marie-Claude Savard-Gagnon and Luc Bradet.
