U.S. Alien Law Eased

n WASHINGTON -- Certain immigrants from Nicaragua, Cuba, Guatemala, El Salvador and the former Soviet bloc are being allowed to avoid deportation under legislation signed by U.S. President Bill Clinton.

The law, enacted Wednesday as part of a spending bill for the District of Columbia, makes changes to last year's immigration bill, which many criticized as unfair to Central Americans.

The Immigration and Naturalization Service said that while applications are pending, it will not deport immigrants who may be eligible to take advantage of the new law.
