Test Missile Explodes

MOSCOW () -- A Russian ballistic missile exploded during a test launch from a nuclear submarine based in the White Sea, causing property damage, Defense Minister Igor Sergeyev said Thursday.

The missile, which had four warheads, was voluntarily destroyed late Wednesday, 200 meters from the launching site at Nepoks due to a technical problem, NTV television reported.

No injuries were reported, but the explosion is said to have shattered the windows in villages situated two kilometers from the site of the explosion.

The missile, launched from the base near the northern city of Severodvinsk, was aimed at a target in the extreme eastern region of Russia.
