Soccer War of Words

SYDNEY, Australia -- The battle between Australia and Iran to claim the last place in next year's World Cup finals has become a political match with their governments becoming involved.

The Iranian Embassy in Canberra raised comments by Soccer Australia chairman David Hill with the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and with Soccer Australia officials, a foreign affairs spokeswoman confirmed.

The first game of their two match playoff is Saturday in Tehran and Hill had criticized the conditions for Australian players.

He said Australia plans to take its own food and water to Iran and described the trip to Tehran as a logistical nightmare.

In response Iran accused Hill of conducting a "campaign of misinformation."
