Sergeyev Promoted

n MOSCOW -- President Boris Yeltsin on Friday gave his defense minister Russia's highest military rank, that of marshal, in the first such promotion since the Soviet collapse.

Yeltsin announced the move at a meeting with Defense Minister Igor Sergeyev at the government's country residence, the presidential press service reported.

Sergeyev, 59, who previously had the rank of army general, was appointed defense minister last May to replace an opponent of radical military cuts.
