Senate NATO Support

n WASHINGTON -- The top Republican and Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee jointly said Monday they were "more convinced than ever" that enlarging NATO is the right thing to do.

The first countries slated to join are Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic. The Senate is to debate ratification of expansion in early 1998.

Committee Chairman Jesse Helms, a Republican from North Carolina, and ranking Democrat Joseph Biden from Delaware circulated a letter to Senate colleagues endorsing the expansion of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
