School Blast Hurts 59

MOSCOW -- An explosion in southern Russia sent toxic gas fumes billowing through a school, injuring 59 children and an undetermined number of adults, NTV television reported.

The explosion occurred Wednesday at a high school in Krasnodar, about 1,200 kilometers south of Moscow, according to the television. It said the injured students were taken to local hospitals complaining of headaches, dizziness and a stinging in their eyes.

Authorities in Krasnodar said they did not know the cause of the explosion or the type of gas that was emitted.

"We are doing our best to find those who did it,'' said Yury Yuryev, deputy chief of investigation for the Rostov region.
