Poland, Ukraine Unite

WARSAW -- Poland and Ukraine will form a joint battalion for international peacekeeping and humanitarian tasks under an agreement signed by their defense ministers Wednesday.

"It is to be operationally ready on 30 March next year," a Warsaw Defense Ministry information official said after Poland's Janusz Onyszkiewicz signed the agreement with Ukraine's Oleksander Kuzmuk, who began a three-day visit.

Poland, well down the road to joining NATO and the European Union, sees a role for itself in supporting Ukraine's reforms and European integration goals to promote regional stability.
