Iranians Celebrate

TEHRAN, Iran -- Tens of thousands of demonstrators marked the 18th anniversary of the seizure of the U.S. Embassy here Tuesday by burning the U.S. flag and thrashing effigies of Uncle Sam.

The parliamentary speaker told the 30,000 protesters that their presence showed there was no chance that Iran would moderate its hostility toward the United States with the change of president last August.

The government celebrates the anniversary as if it were a religious feast. On Nov. 4, 1979, militant students stormed the U.S. Embassy and took 52 Americans hostage for 444 days.
