Indonesian Protest

n VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- Indonesian dissidents say the government of Indonesian President Suharto threatened to punish them if they protest during a meeting of Pacific Rim leaders.

The dissidents accused the Indonesian government Thursday of spying on a People's Summit they are attending with other activists during the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum.

An Indonesian spokesman said he didn't know of any attempt to monitor Indonesians in Canada. He said the punishment threat applied only to protests that threaten the safety of Suharto, who is scheduled to attend the APEC meeting.

The activists' meeting includes critics of Indonesia's record on human rights.
