Hashimoto: Look East

OTTAWA, Canada -- Russia will have to shift its focus from Europe to Asia when it enters the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, or APEC, grouping next year, Japanese Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto said Wednesday.

"The important thing [about Russia's APEC entry] is that it will now decisively turn the interest it has toward Europe to the East," Hashimoto told reporters in Ottawa after attending the APEC meeting. "This is a major thing, not only for Japan but for everyone."

Hashimoto said it was important for the leaders of the four major nations, the United States, China, Japan and Russia, to have a natural forum in which to meet and have informal discussions.
