Estonian Stocks Firm Up Slightly

TALLINN, Estonia -- The Estonian market struggled to firm slightly by close on Friday after a week of steady slides.

The market index edged up 0.36 percent to 190.30 on total turnover of 99.3 million kroons ($7.1 million).

"Prices fell suddenly on opening and stayed there until mid-session when there was some buying interest from foreign investors who were testing the market," one dealer said.

But he added that sellers came back on the market to pull the index down from the day's highs.

The most active stock was traditional leader Hansapank, which saw turnover of 35.6 million kroons to close 3.75 kroons lower at 81 kroons.

"Hansa was higher, but some late deals outside of the 86-89 kroon range took the stock lower," one trader said.

Hoiupank gained three kroons to close at 82.5 kroons on trade of 22.9 million kroons.

The Estonian market has fallen 22 percent during a nervous week in the wake of rising interest rates and heavy selling by leveraged investors.
