Editor Assaulted

MOSCOW -- A newspaper editor in a restive southern Russian region was attacked and apparently beaten by metal sticks, police said Tuesday.

Galina Beibutova, editor in chief of the Dagestanskaya Pravda newspaper, was found unconscious Tuesday on the stairs of her house in Makhachkala, the capital of Russia's Dagestan republic, city police said.

She was hospitalized with head, back and other injuries, said the report, cited by Interfax.

Interfax pointed out that Dagestanskaya Pravda, a widely read newspaper in the republic, recently published an article sharply attacking organized criminal groups active in Dagestan.
