Children Protest Labor

NEW DELHI, India -- Middle class students in crisp school uniforms joined hands Thursday with poor children who slave in sweatshops to rally against child labor, turning a central New Delhi park into a colorful and poignant carnival.

"Break the chains! Save my childhood!" the young protesters chanted, led by adult activists who bused in children from around northern India for the rally.

The International Labor Organization estimates 250 million children under 15 work around the world, many of them in extremely hazardous conditions. Over 60 percent of the world's working children are from Asian countries -- and more than half of those live in India.
