British Inflation Climbs

n LONDON -- Headline British inflation pushed up to a two-year high in October, official figures showed Tuesday, leaving economists divided on whether interest rates should rise further.

The Office for National Statistics said retail prices edged up by 0.1 percent last month, giving an annual inflation rate of 3.7 percent, the highest since September 1995.

Underlying inflation, which excludes home loan payments, crept higher to an annual 2.8 percent from 2.7, moving further away from the government's 2.5 percent target.
