Berube Suspended

LANDOVER, Maryland -- Washington's Craig Berube was suspended for one game without pay Tuesday for calling Florida's Peter Worrell, who is black, a "monkey'' during an on-ice scuffle over the weekend.

Berube, who makes $600,000 a year, was due to miss Wednesday's game against Montreal. His game salary of $7,300 will go to the National Hockey League's emergency assistance fund.

"Even accepting Mr. Berube's explanation of what transpired and that Mr. Worrell is satisfied with the explanation and Mr. Berube's apology, the remarks cannot be ignored,'' said Brian Burke, senior vice president
