Belarus' Flag Protest

MINSK, Belarus -- Unidentified opponents of Belarussian President Alexander Lukashenko displayed outlawed red and white nationalist flags throughout the former Soviet republic on Thursday to protest his policies.

The flags, which were put out overnight in Minsk and other Belarussian cities, appeared to be an opposition protest to mark the anniversary of last year's referendum that gave Lukashenko sweeping powers.

Lukashenko used the Nov. 24 referendum to disband the old parliament dominated by his foes and replace it with a new hand-picked one.

One huge flag was put on the roof of a building in downtown Minsk, and authorities sent a fire engine to remove it.
