$37M for Chernobyl

n NEW YORK-- Participants from about three dozen countries pledged $37 million toward the building of a new concrete shelter to cover the still-dangerous reactor damaged in the 1986 mishap at the Ukraine's Chernobyl nuclear plant.

Tentative plans call for the entire plant to be shut down in 2000, but immediate concerns are that a concrete "sarcophagus'' built over the No. 4 reactor, disabled in the 1986 disaster, is deteriorating so fast that it poses a threat to the environment and safety of the region.

A goal of nearly $800 million has been set by the international community to build a new, permanent sarcophagus.
