200 Chechen Captives

MOSCOW () -- Nearly 200 people have been taken hostage in Chechnya so far this year, the breakaway Russian republic's deputy prosecutor said in Grozny.

Deputy Prosecutor Magomed Magomadod said Wednesday that 137 hostages had been freed but 54 were still being held, including two Hungarians, two Britons and a Turk.

Chechen security forces had arrested some 60 suspects.

The seizure of hostages for ransom is a growth industry in Chechnya, which is still devastated after a two-year war to assert its independence from Russia.
