U.S. Drops Nuclear Blast Claim

WASHINGTON -- The White House has formally dropped a claim that Russia may have illegally detonated a nuclear weapon in the Arctic Circle, The Washington Post said Tuesday. The newspaper said the U.S. administration backed off the allegation after a CIA report concluded last week that the Aug. 16 seismic event was ""almost certainly"" not caused by a nuclear explosion. The CIA had initially reported to the White House several days after the event in the Kara Sea that it was likely caused by an explosion at a nearby Russian nuclear test site, the daily said. But CIA Director George Tenet accepted the findings of four independent experts he had appointed and distributed their report to senior U.S. officials and key lawmakers on Capitol Hill, the newspaper reported.
