Uphill Struggle in Israel

TEL AVIV, Israel -- U.S. envoy Dennis Ross seemed to make little headway on Tuesday toward getting a squabbling Israel and PLO to engage in substantive peacemaking.

Senior Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat said Ross was keeping the peace process going despite Israel.

"Mr Ross is breathing artificial life in the peace process," Erekat said during a panel discussion in front of hundreds at the Tel Aviv Hilton sponsored by the newly inaugurated Peres Centre for Peace, a private institute. "With this [Israeli] government we do not have trust or confidence. Ross is simply helping make the process survive."
