Troops Close In

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka -- Government troops closed in on the biggest rebel-held town in northern Sri Lanka after two days of fighting that left at least 300 combatants dead, the military said Tuesday.

"All roads leading to Mullaittivu are blocked by the troops," said Major Kumara Dewage, a military spokesman.

The guerrillas still have an escape route through the jungle. The latest fighting is the largest battle in more than two months.

Tamil rebels captured Mullaittivu last July after overrunning a garrison of 1,400 government fighters.
