Spartak Wins First Leg 2-0

Russian champion Spartak Moscow kept its winning record intact in the UEFA Cup when it beat Real Valladolid of Spain 2-0 in Moscow in their first leg of the second-round Tuesday.

Real keeper Cesar Dominguez stopped Maxim Buznikin's attempt from close range in the 58th minute, but Andrei Tikhonov calmly slotted a perfect cross from Valery Kechinov into the far corner past Dominguez just two minutes later to put his team ahead 1-0.

Yegor Titov slammed home an insurance goal six minutes from the end of the game to make it 2-0.

In the first half the Spanish players had been content with a scoreless game, having at times up to 10 men on their own half of the field.

Spartak's smaller forwards had a hard time penetrating a tight Real defense on a slow, muddy field at Moscow's Lokomotiv Stadium. But the Muscovites tried a new offensive after the interval.

It remains to be seen two weeks from now in Spain in the return match if a two-goal cushion will carry Spartak to the next round. The Muscovites will have little rest after Tuesday's victory. They host Fakel Voronezh in a postponed Russian League match Friday.
