New WorldCom Exec

LONDON -- WorldCom, the U.S. telecom company bidding nearly $35 billion to take over MCI Communications, has appointed one of Britain's most controversial businessmen to lead its international division, the Financial Times reported Tuesday.

Liam Strong, chief executive of the Sears retailing group until he resigned in May after 18 months of criticism from investors and analysts, would become chief executive of WorldCom International on Tuesday, said the paper.

WorldCom International is responsible for the group's operations outside North America, including fiber-optic connections around Europe's main financial centers.
