Motorola Earnings Rise

SCHAUMBURG, Illinois -- Motorola Corp.'s earnings rose 29 percent in the third quarter, but the company said its results were below expectations because of weak pager sales and a decision to stop making Macintosh-type computers.

The company earned $266 million, or 44 cents a share, on sales of $7.4 billion for the quarter ending Sept. 30. That compared with earnings of $206 million, or 34 cents a share, on sales of $6.5 billion in the same period last year.

The Schaumburg-based company said Monday it took a $95 million before-tax charge against its third-quarter earnings to end its relationship with Apple Computer Inc. It attributed the move to Apple's decision to limit the introduction of its new technology and phase out future licensing.
