Luzhkov's Textbooks

MOSCOW -- Mayor Yury Luzhkov said the city government plans to send textbooks to Russian-language schools in former Soviet republics, Itar-Tass reported.

Speaking to a meeting of participants in the nationwide Russia's Teacher of the Year 1997 competition, Luzhkov said the textbooks would be sent to Azerbaijan, Georgia, Estonia, Lithuania and the cities of Vilnius and Sevastopol.

The textbooks will be drawn from Moscow's reserves, the mayor said.

The mayor also announced that a number of the city's older schools, some dating from the early 1930s, will be rebuilt and others remodeled.
