Latvia Town Sells Lenin

RIGA, Latvia -- The cash-strapped Latvian town of Preili has sold its statue of Lenin, which once stood proudly outside the old Communist Party headquarters, so it can light its streets at night.

"We will now have funds to keep the street lamps on and schools and kindergartens ... will also receive a share," said Valdis Upenieks, Preili's chief civil engineer.

The 4.8 ton metal sculpture was sold for 4,000 lats ($8,000) to a British buyer.
