Kidnappers Get Life

MOSCOW -- An Islamic court in Chechnya handed down life sentences Monday to at least three men convicted of kidnapping a banker in the separatist republic, Russian news agencies reported.

The kidnappers had demanded a ransom of $1 million for the Chechen banker, who was abducted in August and later freed by Chechen security service agents, according to the reports.

Chechnya has been troubled by frequent ransom-motivated kidnappings, particularly since the end of the 1994-96 war against Moscow. Fifty-four people, including four French aid workers, are still being held, Interfax reported.
