Kafelnikov Backs Out of CA-Trophy

VIENNA, Austria -- Top seed Yevgeny Kafelnikov was treated for a sore back on his way to a 6-4, 7-5 defeat by Slovakia's Karol Kucera in the first round of the $800,000 CA-Trophy.

Following the defeat of second seed Sergi Bruguera on Monday, world No. 8 Goran Ivanisevic is now the tournament favorite.

But the Croat had a difficult passage into the second round, squeezing home 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 over Denmark's Frederik Fetterlein.

Fifth seed and French Open champion Gustavo Kuerten also struggled against Spain's Albert Costa but won 7-5, 3-6, 7-6.

Switzerland's Marc Rosset was also troubled by back pains which forced him to retire in the second set against eighth seed Thomas Enqvist of Sweden.

Kafelnikov, the world No. 6 said his back troubles began in Basle last week.

"I felt very sore this morning," the Russian said. "I think I must have pulled a back muscle which just got worse during the match.

"Under other circumstances I would never have gone on court today. But the year is almost over and I want to go to the world championships in November."

Kafelnikov, Bruguera and Costa all needed to collect as many points as possible to earn a place in the ATP Tour world championship in Hanover, starting Nov. 10.
