Italian Police Accused

ROME -- English soccer fans said they were beaten by Italian police after being arrested in Rome over the weekend and alleged that officers forced them to sign written confessions for crimes they had not committed.

The fans were speaking Monday after being sentenced in an Italian court for public order offenses related to England's World Cup qualifying match against Italy on Saturday night.

British authorities have asked Italy for an urgent report on policing of the match.

But a statement from one police union, Lisipo, said: "Those individuals who had literally soaked up entire store-rooms of alcohol found themselves up against a country and a police force which demands respect for the law from everybody -- hooligans included."
