Hindus Win Vote

LUCKNOW, India -- Hindu nationalists won a crucial vote of confidence in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday after deputies traded blows and threw chairs at one another.

The tussle pitted deputies of the Hindu Bharatiya Janata Party, which won the vote, against centrist and leftist opposition groups.

Political analysts said events in the state, which accounts for a maximum 85 seats in India's 545-seat federal parliament, could influence electoral alliances and eventually the composition of India's federal government.
