Hemorrhagic Fever

MOSCOW -- Health officials in the Orenburg region on Russia's border with Kazakhstan have registered 279 cases of hemorrhagic fever since last summer, including two fatal incidents, Itar-Tass said Tuesday.

According to regional officials, the infection rate has dropped off significantly, with just three new cases reported daily compared with 12 during the peak of the epidemic in the region.

The autonomous region of Udmurtia to the north of Orenburg has registered 643 cases of the disease that have resulted in six fatalities.

Officials in both regions have linked the epidemic to a rise in the population of rodents that carry the disease.
