Georgian Diplomat Pleads Guilty

WASHINGTON -- A Georgian diplomat scheduled to go on trial Wednesday pleaded guilty to all charges in the traffic death of a teenager.

The plea abruptly ended the need for a trial in the death of Jovianna Waltrick, 16, who was killed in January. Her family had recently moved to Maryland from Brazil.

The case against Georgui Makharadze had raised concern about diplomats who avoid punishment for crimes.

Georgia waived his diplomatic immunity so he could answer to the charges of involuntary manslaughter in the Jan. 3 crash.

"I take full responsibility for what happened," said Makharadze in court as the trial was about to begin.

Makharadze will be sentenced Dec. 19 on five charges -- one count of involuntary manslaughter and four counts of aggravated assault.
