Brazauskas Won't Run

VILNIUS, Lithuania -- Lithuanian President Algirdas Brazauskas said he had decided against running for a second term in December's presidential elections, saying his past as a Communist was damaging the Baltic state's image.

Brazauskas was swept to power in 1993, completing a shock return of former communists to power in Lithuania and setting a trend followed in much of post-communist Eastern Europe.

"But I want to say straight and openly that I am not going to run for president. ... These are difficult words I am saying to you," Brazauskas, 65, said Monday in a live television speech.
