Airline Sells Catering

LONDON -- British Airways, which had faced the prospect of labor unrest over plans to sell its last in-flight catering operations, said Wednesday that the buyer will be a catering group run by Swissair's owners.

British Airways did not immediately disclose the price it will get by selling the catering operations to Gate Gourmet, a subsidiary of Swissair's corporate parent, SAir Group. British Airways will also give Gate Gourmet a long-term supply contract for its Heathrow flights.

British Airways chief executive Bob Ayling decided to get out of catering as part of his plans to cut 1 billion pounds ($1.6 billion) in annual costs by 2000.
