Agents Seize Heroin at Sheremetyevo

Customs agents found heroin-soaked cardboard in the luggage of a Pakistani student when he arrived at a Moscow airport, Itar-Tass reported.

They seized 8.3 kilograms of cardboard packaging that tests confirmed were saturated with heroin, Itar-Tass said late Monday.

It was the first time Russian customs had come across this form of drug smuggling, the report said.

The luggage belonged to a Pakistani headed to Ukraine to begin his university studies, the news agency said, citing the officials at the customs service.

After leaving Islamabad, the young man had stopped in Almaty, the capital of Kazakhstan.

The man was detained at Sheremetyevo Airport on Sunday, the report said. It was unclear when he arrived.

Drug seizures have become increasingly common at Moscow's airports in post-Soviet times.
