World's Tallest Jesus Statue Set

JERUSALEM -- An Israeli architect has designed what is being billed as the world's tallest statue of Jesus, to be constructed by the year 2000 in Sicily.

The $15 million, 51-meter statue will also be one of the most abstract, designer David De Mayo said Monday.

Three titanium columns representing the holy trinity will rise from the ground, supporting a transparent globe that symbolizes Jesus's head, serves as an observation deck and supports a television transmitter to broadcast shows on religion.

The Jesus will rise to more than twice the height of the Jesus statue in Rio De Janeiro, just topping New York's Statue of Liberty.

It was commissioned by Father Luigi Ferlauto, a Sicilian priest who has run the children's colony in the village of Troina for 30 years.
