Visas Delay Trial

ARUSHA, Tanzania () -- The problem-plagued tribunal on Rwanda's 1994 genocide adjourned after a brief start Thursday when the prosecution failed to present witnesses because they had not arrived from Rwanda.

Rwanda swiftly blamed the UN-created tribunal for the snag, saying it applied for travel documents for the witnesses only two days ago.

"The tribunal is going to postpone until tomorrow [Friday] afternoon so that the prosecution can be allowed to present evidence," Laity Kama of Senegal, chairman of the three-person panel of judges, told the court.

Tribunal officials told reporters 31 witnesses due to testify against Hutu former government official Jean-Paul Akayesu had encountered visa problems.
