State Ponders Television Tax

Russia might levy a new tax on imported color television sets to protect defense industry plants trying to make television sets for the domestic market, Interfax reported Thursday.

The agency quoted an official of the Foreign Economic Relations Ministry, Andrei Kushnirenko, as saying the government is investigating whether an import tax is justified for sets with 14- and 21-inch screens.

Kushnirenko said the new levy would be added to a 20-percent duty already imposed on 14-inch sets and a 30-percent duty on 21-inch sets.

It is the latest in a series of proposals to tax or slap quotas on imports as diverse as vodka and frozen chicken parts to protect domestic producers and raise federal revenue. Critics have warned that such protectionist measures are counterproductive.
