Slumdwellers Protest

CALCUTTA, India -- Residents of a Calcutta slum, promised millions of pounds in financial aid by British Prime Minister John Major, reacted here Friday by launching a series of protests.

The slumdwellers at Swinhoe Lane, visited by Major on Thursday, have been told by city planners that three ponds will have to be filled to make way for a new school and hospital to be built with British funds.

The residents fear the loss of the ponds could lead to waterlogging problems. G. Banthiya, a resident at a protest meeting here Friday said: "The local administration should be more particular about protecting our interests rather than projecting a bright picture of the city to a particular dignitary."
