Slain Unionist Buried

ALGIERS, Algeria () -- The high-profile leader of Algeria's main trade union, Abdelhak Benhamouda, assassinated Tuesday by suspected Islamic militants, was buried Thursday in Algiers at a ceremony attended by President Liamine Zeroual.

Earlier hundreds of mourners, including ministers and leaders of political parties, filed past the coffin as his body lay at the headquarters of the General Union of Algerian Workers. Benhamouda was buried in the martyrs' corner of El Alia cemetery.

A close supporter of Zeroual and a sworn enemy of Islamic fundamentalists, Benhamouda was killed by five gunmen as he left union headquarters in May 1st Square in central Algiers.
