Official Backs Down

NAGANO, Japan () -- A top Japanese Olympic official backed down Wednesday after making disparaging remarks about speed skating in the Winter Games.

Goro Yoshimura, vice president of the Nagano Olympic Committee and also governor of Nagano prefecture, site of the 1998 Winter Games, had said he believed spectators found Japanese-style open races more entertaining than Olympic-style timed races, which he compared to "beetles on a whirligig."
