Miners Receive Pay

VLADIVOSTOK, Far East -- Miners in Russia's Far East got their first pay Monday in five months, but the regional coal company warned that it will soon run short of money again.

The Primorsky region's coal company was able to start paying its miners after receiving about 11 billion rubles ($2 million) from state coal company Rosugol, said Anatoly Vasyanovich, head of the regional company.

This was not enough, however, to cover overdue back wages of 37 billion rubles, Vasyanovich told Itar-Tass.

Miners throughout Russia went on strike in December to demand wages that had not been paid in months.
