Krupp Upgrades Mine

TASHKENT, Uzbekistan () -- Germany's Krupp has started delivering machinery under a $123-million deal to upgrade Uzbekistan's aging coal mining industry, a news agency said Thursday.

Krupp Hoesch Stahlexport and Ugol, the main coal producer in this former Soviet republic, have signed an agreement to replace 60 percent of the company's equipment, said Viktor Byzeyev, an Ugol chief executives. The deal would allow Ugol to boost production from 2.84 million metric tons last year to 5 million metric tons annually by 2001, Interfax quoted Byzeyev as saying.
